3 Disadvantages of Using Your Own Name in The Domain

I’ve written a little early 4 advantages of using your own name in the domain and now it’s the time to let you know what are the disadvantages of doing this. Unfortunately, there are a lot of disadvantages too, so you will have to read these two posts and decide what’s best for you. Unfortunately new bloggers don’t know about these advantages or disadvantages and take the wrong decision they later regret.
You Can’t Turn it Into a Collective Blog
It would be really awkward for more bloggers to write on your personal blog that contains your name in the domain. There are a few exceptions that actually work, though they’re not very obvious. At the moment only one comes in my mind and it’s a very popular blog called GigaOm, where Om comes from the founder’s name, Om Malik. Fortnately the man is lucky for having such a short and less popular name and I’m pretty sure the majority of his readers don’t know where the domain name comes from.
I wouldn’t really like getting other bloggers to write on AlexDumitru.com along with me, because this is my blog where I express my rants, I share my experience and I write about me. People don’t come here to see what others write, but what I do. Of course it’s ok to accept guest posts, but that’s something else.
You Can’t Sell it
Who would want to buy a blog with your name ? There are many reasons nobody would buy your blog and I will only list a few. People read the blog because they like what you write and many of them would probably leave along with you. Nobody would like to buy a blog with your name, because it’s very hard to promote by someone else and it would be really awkward to come on AlexDumitru.com and on the “about me” page to read about someone called Smith or something like that.
So if you choose to use your own name in the domain name, don’t even think about the opportunity of selling it.
There’s a Risk You Won’t be Taken Serious
If your blog grows and you become a relatively important person, then you might want to be taken serious and start writing about big and important stuff. Unfortunately people have more trust in big publications with fancy names and designs than a personal blog. If will be much harder to break the news on a blog with your personal name, though this is not an exact rule. It’s possible, though the chances are a little lower.
Ending
These are the 3 reasons I could think about right now and I don’t think there is any other big reason why you shouldn’t use your own name in the domain. Like you see, I’ve chose to use my own name, because I want to build my personal brand and also I don’t intend transforming this blog in any big publication. I’ll probably do that soon with another collective blog where we will write about social media and internet trends. Though I will let you know more about it once I get a good team for it.
So what would you choose. Your own name or not ?
Absolutely correct Alex! My blog is all about me and I feel that I don’t like any other people to write on my blog (although guest blog is not bad for backlink purposes like John Chow). No matter what happens, I’m not going to sell my own name to others.
Thanks!
Neither will I
Good reasons, I don’t blog under my name due to most of these reasons
So you prefer to build another brand, rather than you own name?
Agree Alex, if you have a cool name like Om Malik then you can combine your name with some other word like OmDesign and thats cool, but if you have some crazy name then I would stay away from using your name for blogs,
Marios
That’s right, Marios.
Good reasons, Alex
I don’t blog under my name due to most of these reasons either.
I’m glad you like my post, Rohan
I started blogging on myfirstandlastname.com and stopped because I realized it would be weird if I ever wanted others to guestpost there. I plan on just turning it into an online résumé.
That’s a good idea, Tristan.
All great points! Also it is bad from an SEO perceptive. That being said this is not an absolute and many companies have worked around it but for a little known blogger starting from scratch having a domain name that reflects your product/service/ideas helps alot.
Hi Thomas and thanks for commenting. It’s both good and bad. All it matters what you want to do
Some good points! Judging from the name of your blog, I’m betting you think the pros of using your name outweigh the cons.
Yes, I do
And the fact that serps love domains with the keyword your trying to rank for.
